A one-time neighbor of ours, a dairyman who lived and worked for a period of time in the dry foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mts., told us that in summer they had to shoe their horses with copper shoes to avoid just what you are talking about.

Most of us don?t think about this much, but the horse?s shoes hitting against the rocks do cause sparks to fly. Have you ever seen this at night? It?s pretty scary on a dry trail. You wouldn?t think that a spark on our dusty trails would cause a fire, but I have heard of it happening.
