Paul,

I don't know "what is normal" but I do know that there has always been a 
few horses that come west for the Tevis. Lawton Johnston would always 
try to make it out. The two rides he tired to do every year was the OD 
(had 11 OD buckles) and the Tevis. Easterners going west to the Tevis is 
quite common.
