2007 YTD exports of slaughter horses: 18,665

Same time last year that number was 5,323. Just a longer haul to conditions and treatment we have NO control over.

I think the plants in Mexico and Canada are still open.
I bet the buyers are smiling all the way to the bank.    No reason the prices of the finished product ready for sale over seas is any less than ever, just the cost here.  Since there is no competition they can buy for nothing.
Another one of the unintended consquences of a poorly thought out law.

One advantage might be that you can find a pretty nice horse in the shipper's pens cheap.  I just heard of someone selling a number of nice registered horses for $25 because of the hay prices and no market to put a floor price under the average horse.
