RE: [RC] USEF Approves New Drug - heidi

Inflamation is both.  It is the "warning light on the dash" and it also causes additional damage if unchecked.

Let's say you have some inflamation of a ligament.  That inflamation will cause the discomfort that tells you to back off.  If you mask the warning signal, you will go on and do more damage.

But at the same time, the chemical biproducts of inflamation will in turn do more damage to the ligament.  So not controling the inflamation is also damaging.

The key is to go ahead and allow the warning signal to happen (ie don't use the drugs during the activity) but to then use the drugs to control the additional damage caused by the inflamation after you have stopped the activity, so that you gain quicker healing.

I always thought that inflammation was a result, not a cause, and
therefore
if we block inflammation and pain we are by-passing the natural controls
that keep horses from doing damage to themselves,
