[RC] USEF approval of new drug - Steph Teeter

I think you guys are reading this press release wrong. USEF already has a list of 'approved drugs' with published withdrawal times, etc. Most of the other disciplines allow certain drugs during competition.

This press release is not about a new policy for drug use in endurance or any other discipline.

This is about adding a new drug to the approved list.

The crux of the press release is the description of the new drug, and it's approval. it seems this is an NSAID which is not as hard on the stomach as others (e.g. bute).

"This new NSAID is the first cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) sparing drug to be approved by the FDA for use in horses. The drug specifically targets cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme responsible for causing inflammation and pain in the body, and spares COX-1, which is associated with many beneficial functions, including production of the protective mucous lining of the stomach."
