The one thing man has done that no other animal in the animal kingdom has done is produce more, bigger and deadlier weapons to use to kill his fellow man. The bomb dropped on Japan contains abut 1/10,000th the explosive power of the average nuke today. The nukes today will generate an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that will wipe out all electronics out within a couple thousand miles. The nukes today will pulverize everything within a 100 mile radius and send it into the atmosphere where it will encircle the earth and block the sunlight for several years, or what is known as the nuclear winter.We are on the verge of the next arms race where "third world" countries such as North Korea, Iran, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and on and on can easily build such weapons and the missiles and bombs to deliver them. Some already have them, some on the verge and some will decide to pursue them because their neighbor has them. Anti-ballistic missile systems don't work well because of the nature of the physics of the problem and they are easily defeated. Nuclear weapons nonproliferation is the most significant challenge facing mankind in the first half of the 21st century. If we can make it to the second half - we'll probably be in good shape. If not there won't be too many worries about over population. Yes man has mastered the atom and has harnessed its energy. However, man has not mastered the wisdom to deal with this energy nor the humidity to know he should. As Einstein once said, "I can't tell you what the third world will will be fought with, but I can tell you what the fourth world war will be fought with - sticks and stones." In this one respect man seems to be quite different from the rest of the animal kingdom he sits in.
