[RC] Leptospirosis Links - Linda Marins

Here are my leptospirosis links. Sorry it took so long; I've changed ISPs.

=====================================================

Here are the Leptospirosis links I found most useful. A lot of these
are 90% redundant with the information in other links, but I saved them
anyway because they contained some fact not stated in the others.

NOTE ON TERMINOLOGY
See http://en.wikipedia.org for explanations of "IgG" "IgM," "ELISA" etc.

World Health Organization

This really is the best detailed up-to-date technical, but-not-too-technical,
source I found. It has a lot about animal lepto because animal lepto
is so totally bound up with transmission to humans. Best source
on serovars, proper titre technique, and sanitary procedures.

Ban Dogs from California Trails Because They Spread Lepto

http://tchester.org/srp/lists/dogs.html
At least one person has tried to get dogs banned from trails
in California by arguing that they spread leptospirosis.

I copied this (and other reports on lepto in wildlife) in
case somebody starts making the same kinds of arguments to
ban horses from trails to protect the water supply, by
claiming horses spread lepto. Lots of
hikers hike with their dogs (it is the most popular single
recreation in my local park's multi-use trail system) and I
figured if they tried to ban horses for lepto, I'd point out that
the exact same argument can (and has been) made to ban
the park commissioners from walking their own dogs!

Lepto in Dogs

http://www.labbies.com/lepto.htm
Lepto in dogs. Mentions the shift from one set of serovars
for which the canine vaccine is effective to a different
set of serovars (including L. pomona) for which it is much
less effective. L. pomona is the big culprit in horses.
The same problem exists for trying to use bovine vaccine
  for horses.
Also mentions that vaccine probably won't protect for
  even a whole year!

Has good references, including a link to a "Leptospirosis Links
Page" that I haven't visited yet (canine orientation.)

Coyotes have moved onto my brother-in-law's east Tennessee farm.
I've seen their scat in my barn. Maybe they are spreading it
instead of the raccoons.

Non-technical summary paper by Mary G. Nelson with references
to other sources. Kind of out-of-date: most recent reference
