[RC] May 2007 Veterinary newsletter-stigma and treatment - Rusty Toth

I am sorry but I strongly feel that anyone who puts their personal ego ahead
of the welfare of their horse and NOT treat it immediately when a problem
arises should not be in this sport. This sport is about the horses, these
wonderful animals that give us everything they have. It is the least we can
do as riders to put the stigma of a treatment and our personal ego away and
take care of our animals.

I have, unfortunately for my horse gone through a few metabolic pulls (an
ulcer we had not found yet) and never once could I let him suffer in pain
and always found a vet ASAP and even asked for fluids. I am horrified at
riders hiding, ignoring or allowing their horses to suffer or worse yet give
their life for ones pride.

I realize accidents do happen and these are not the riders I am speaking of.
I am only referring to those who know their horses are colicing or suffering
in someway and do not get veterinarian help, and yes this does unfortunately
happen.

Sorry for the rant. I just strongly believe the horses must come first.
