Re: [RC] [RC] Dealing with race-brain - Beth Walker

I would just like to add something here. I have a race-brain that I am currently dealing with, so this was of interest to me, too. Lots of helpful suggestions.

However, at our last ride, I tried the 'getting off and walking'. Didn't work - even though we had practiced on that piece of trail several times before the ride. He was a total bully, kept trying to push ahead, etc. I got my foot stepped on, and nearly pushed off the trail.

I ended up getting back on - it was safer. In training, he will follow very nicely behind me - he has always exhibited nice ground manners when calm. When the "race brain" clicks on, all that seems to go out the window. Something else for me to work on. I'm now making him follow behind *everywhere* I lead him, instead of beside me - even around the stable. Maybe some of it will carry over.

I did get him slowed down this ride, and we did complete. That's a victory for me with this horse. First race, he was too hyped to meet criterion at the first check. This is race #3 for the two of us. We have a ways to go yet...
