Re: [RC] [RC] Dealing with Race Brain - Dawn CarrieI started doing rides on Bear in summer of 2005. By fall 2006 he was a decent citizen. Actually, his last ride that I threatened to turn him into Alpo was in Nov. 2006 on a 50, when he suddenly reverted into a total raving lunatic and was the worst he'd ever been in his life. But 3 weeks later at the Goethe 100 he was perfect...we started off at a trot, with horses trotting off ahead of us, and I barely had contact on the reins. He's been very good ever since. So I guess it took a little over a year from his first ride for him to learn "the rules." He still fusses occasionally and wants to go faster, but he recognizes who calls the shots and listens to me. It was a lot of work, and we finished a lot of rides in turtle position or close to it, but it was worth it to get him to the point that he isn't a butthead to ride. I'm not competitive anyway, so I really don't care where I finish.
Now that I've got Bear lined out, it's time to work on Sundance's brain...I don't know how competitive he'll be, in terms of wanting to chase other horses. I've only done one 50 on him, and it usually takes several rides for that race brain to really kick in.
