RE: [RC] race brain horse - pat holsebeke

Hi there. It was at a multi day ride that he first
exhibited this behavior. It is not herd boundness. He
is fine by himself and does not try to follow other
horses going the opposite direction. He is not in
condition to do 50s or longer. This is a behavior
problem that is extremely dangerous. This is a horse
that I have had to overcome a multitude of issues
with. So far I have persevered and he came in second
on his first ride this year out of 24. His problem is
he has to be in the lead and it came out of no where.
I am doing my best to retrain and it is slow going. He
is very very very stubborn and has a temper. I am not
inexperienced. I have been riding and training horses
for over 40yrs. I am getting old but you never know it
all so I thought some one might have a positive
suggestion. Taking a runaway bucking horse on any ride
would not only be dangerous to me but rude and
dangerous to others. I have trained another horse off
the track to be a great trail horse he would only
behave at the very rear of the group. It took about
5yrs. and alot of sweat to change his bad habits and
alot of riding. I have answered my own question. It
will take alot of riding. That is the key to any
problem. Work.

Subject: [RC] race brain horse

Hi. I have a horse that after 3 novice rides has
suddenly decided that if
any other horse gets in front and starts to trot or
canter he tries to buck
me off and run away. Where does this come from!!!! I
have taken him back to
the drawing board and canceled all other rides for
the year until he learns
to be a good trail horse again. I am practicing with
one of our older horses
and rider in front and making him do patterns behind
or serpentine from side
to side on a wide trail. It seems to be working but
will not know for sure
until we get on a narrow trail if the schooling has
worked. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. Pattie Holsbeke
