Re: [RC] horse potty trained itself - Sharon Levasseur

Yep, my gelding lives alone and does his business in just 2-3 areas in his
turnout. He does NOT use his run-in as one of those areas, thank goodness.

Quoting Karen Everhart <rainbowmeadowsranch@xxxxxxxxx>:

Hi Michelle,

Many horses do this. They are called dung piles. Studs do it all the time,
as a part of their "marking" behavior. Individual horses do it, too. I find
it more common with mares than geldings which are prone to mess up
everything:-)

  I am amazed at what
I am finding. My back pasture, that has no trees and is where she mostly
grazes, has no poop in it. It used too be full of pooping spots when I had
the two horses. But now my mare just poops in the little woodsy, hilly
area of my pasture that is close to the barn.

I think it's really smart of her. Now she has more places to graze. My
pasture still looks great, even with it being so dry here (n. KY).

Now I'm hoping she can teach the new horse, a 17 yr old arab mare, to poop
  in the right spot!!

Has any one else ever seen this?

She's an 8 year old half arabian half shagya mare. Who is really doing
better than I thought she would being by herself. I think it's been a good
learning experience for her. She seems a little braver and more
independent. She spent the first 6 years of her life in a big herd of
  mares.
