LOL karen, if you think about it how hard would it be for a horse to learn 
if it fakes lameness it gets out of work??
something happens..the horse is lame.  you immediately get off.  no work 
today. maybe the horse is better day after tomorrow and appears sound but 
when you mount your weight causes the foot/leg/shoulder/etc. to be 
uncomfortable so the horse is lame again.
you get off <s> light goes on!!
in the case of the tb i told about he did start off being lame, i'm sure, 
and evidently continued with pretending after he was okay so his former 
owner gave up on him and sent him to auction.  former owner probably didn't 
spend the time i did watching him when he didn't have the threat of work 
hanging over him.
some horses are smarter than they need to be.
