[RC] How did you find your endurance horse? - Sharon Hahn

I had ridden other people's horses as a teenager, but never had one of my own.  I saw an ad in the paper for a half-lease and thought, "I'm an adult, I can have a horse if I want to."  Thus Cameo and I met.  About 6 months later, her owner decided to sell her.  At first I resisted, because I was doing temp work and wasn't sure I was staying in Minnesota permanently (didn't want to haul a horse cross-country).  Eventually, I caved in and bought her. I didn't vet check her because I'd already had the benefit of a 6 month trial and she seemed healthy and sound.  We got into endurance because she had a lot of energy and wasn't particularly good at anything else.  Twelve years later, we're still doing great.

I purchased my other mare as a weanling from an endurance person who does some breeding.  It was hard to find a weanling bred to actually perform - seems like most people who sell horses that young breed them for the show ring, but I really wanted a baby to train.  I felt really good about that purchase (nothing like spending 4 hours on a competitive ride with someone to understand how their training theories and how they interact with horses).  Unfortunately, that mare broke her ankle in a freak pasture accident and may never make it to the competition scene, although she is ridable.
