Okay - here's an off-the-wall suggestion.

When I took guitar lessons a gazillion years ago, my grandfather suggested I
soak my finger tips in pickle brine or vinegar.  He said it was an old prize
fighters' trick.  He had hung out at the Jim Jeffries ring in Burbank,
California.  So there - you now know I am older than dirt.

It  did cause sort of a smooth callus to form on my finger tips.  I'm not
sure how one would apply pickle brine to the corners of a horse's moth.
Paint it on?
