The end of the second and third paragraphs are not quite true, but the reply to the article corrects some of the inaccuracies.
 
A few years ago I was riding at the top of Shafer Butte.  It is a long ride, either by bike or by horse, and a great trail to train for 100s -- horse, foot, or bike.  It was a cool day and up near the top Frank and I met a lone mountain biker.  That biker stopped and we talked for a while.  The biker unwrapped a granola bar and offered it to my horse Frank.  Now, Frank actively looks for mountain bikers!
