Re: [RC] Refusing entry - Truman Prevatt

The AERC has as responsibility - if a protest if filed - to determine the facts and rule based on the facts. The AERC has a responsibility to all members and riders to insure that if entry is refused it is done for a justifiable reason. The list a few examples, not payment of ride fees was one. The examples used were pretty serious infractions.

I look at this quite a bit like an ump in a baseball game or a referee in a basketball game. There is a line and that line is actually pretty firm. You don't get ejected from a game for "trash talking" unless it goes too far. When I was in college one of the things I did in the summer was umpire American Legion baseball games. American Legion is 17-18 year olds and it pretty high level. I probably couldn't tell you exactly where the line was all the time but if a player or manager kicked dirt on my shoes intentionally during a discussion - he was gone. If he kept his comments to the specifics of the play he was fine. If he referred to me being "blind" he was fine but if he questioned my mother's material status he was gone ;-) .

In cases such as the one described at the CT region rides I expect that there are two sides of the story. I don't really care to hear the second side since it will then get personal. However, the only way to find out were the line lies is to file a protest.

I'm going to go ride now.

I just read on the published protests that Ride mangers can refuse entry with cause.

Ride managers put on rides; the AERC merely sanctions them. Ride managers take all of the risk and do all of the work so that the rest of us can enjoy our sport. The Committee is not inclined to second guess a ride manager's discretionary decisions. The Committee will generally defer to a ride manager's judgment when it is exercised reasonably.

am I wrong???
