Re: [RC] How Did You Find Your Soul [Endurance] Horse ? - rides2far

How did you connect with your current or best-all-time endurance
horse?

Danny Herlong called me to see if I'd sell this "little gray horse" for
him. Word was out I liked to sell horses. I told him I only sold
beginner's horses and he said, "Well this AIN'T no beginner's horse"
Then I mentioned I was without a horse since mine that hadn't worked out
and was for sale decided to shatter his splint bone, which required
surgery and all my horse money, and he couldn't be sold for 4 more
months. Danny told me, "Take this horse, ride him, if you like him you
can pay me for him whenever you have the money, if not send him back"

How did you know s/he was the right horse for you?

First, I could get him for no money. :-) Second, he sent a video and I
loved the way he spread out in the rear. Third, I really liked the
Herlongs and I had a rule that I didn't want to be "good advertising" for
someone I didn't like by doing well with their horse.

Did you make a list of what you wanted and stick to it?

I did want a 14.2 gelding and liked grays. Cheap, spread out in the rear,
all that helped.

Did you get a seasoned horse or put the miles on h/h yourself?

He'd been ridden a tad in the ring, never had a bit in his mouth, was
pretty much from scratch.

What kind of evaluation did you get besides a pre-purchase vet exam?

Didn't even get a coggins. Danny said, "If he comes up positive, shoot
him and you don't owe me nothing for him. >g<

Did you get, like, a 30-day free home trial?

Gosh no. I am a firm believer that horses always try to kill themselves
if there's any question who would be responsible for vet bills at any
given time. When I brought Gunner home I was not impressed for the first
30 days. I'm glad I didn't have a trial or I'd have sent him back.
Really, same with Kaboot. He trotted like a fat pony. I'd have never have
dreamed he'd have learned to trot the way he did later.

Mistakes to avoid?? Other advice and warnings??

The biggest mistake I see people make is thinking they have to keep a
horse once they buy him. There's a lot you can't find out till you own
them, but if they don't match you, they may match someone else and you
should move on.

I rode Kaboot for quite a while before he impressed me any.
