Myself, I do not use HR monitors, what works for me to quickly check my HR and how close it is to criteria is to just grab a quick pulse under the jaw. I can pretty much tell if I am close to criteria with just a couple of beats and it also allows me to judge the character of the pulse, which gives me a a better sense to how my horse is really doing. If it is feeling thready, and taking time to come down, my horse is stressed vs a strong even pulse which demonstrates that I am cruising pretty well.
