[RC] tricks to entice eating - victoria thompson

Need some input or helpful tricks from the masses, please.

I moved my mare, Taffy, from her stable in Norco CA up to where my colt lives with Lynne Glazer in Gavilan Hills CA. She has gone on a hunger strike. She used to get fed a 60/40 combo of orchard grass/alfalfa. She loved it. Now she is getting bermuda grass hay in the morning and bermuda and alfalfa in the evenings. She will only eat the alfalfa. She has been up there exactly 9 days, and she is not happy. She coliced on Tuesday night. That resolved with a belly full of oil by the next morning. She was very hungry and I was hoping a night without any food would make her want to eat anything put in front of her. Wrong. Wouldn't touch the grass. I had to give her alfalfa before she would eat. She has noticeably lost weight.

I will not cater to her whims. The only reason why I'm doing it now is because we Southern Californians are going through a really nasty cold snap (record breaking lows) and I can't just let her starve until she gets so hungry she breaks down and begins to eat. If this were a normal So Cal winter or a different season I'd let her go hungry, but I don't need or want her to get sick.

Do any of you have any tricks up your sleeves that might entice the B*#@* to eat?

Tori
