[RC] Re:Sarcoids - Mary Howell

I've had two experiences with sarcoids.

In Feb.1996, I rescued a starving TB in his mid-teens.
"Manassas" had an extremely large (hand sized) sarcoid
on his chest and smaller dime and quarter- sized ones
in both ears. The upper part of one ear was almost
overtaken by them, and once fly weather started, flies
began laying eggs in that ear.

My vet at the time (same vet who took care of Secretariat
while he was in VA!) said she had never on her 40+ year
career seen such a bad case. Her assistant froze them off,
a laborious process that took over an hour and destroyed
the cartilage the one ear to the point that it flopped over.
At least the fly problem was solved. (I eventually traded
Manassas to my farrier for shoeing, and he was later able
to sell him as a safe trail horse.)

About the same time, my endurance horse was kicked in the
Chest. A year or so later, a sarcoid began to emerge from
the trauma. It was located where the breastcollar would rub,
and first the vet removed it surgically to try and prevent
scarring. Several months later, the sarcoid began coming back
so we ended up freezing it and Shiloh has the scar to this day.

Sarcoids do grow and are easier to eradicate if treated while small.
Freezing is most effective, but the hair won't grow back.
