Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] The Price of Gas - Juli Jakub

The car actually can run on all sorts of veggie oil not just corn...he says peanut oil is the best! But I agree there is no perfect solution and any solution is hard to agree on....I just like the idea of a veggie powered car for the fun of it and to save myself money...we work at a school and can use the oil from the fryers for free ( most restaurants will also allow you to have their discard oil for free) all you have to do is filter it which is not so hard. I am not proposing it as a solution for the whole world...I just think it is neat!

I don't think there is enough soil in the USA to grow enough corn or whatever, to make into enough bio-fuel to run all the cars. Furthermore, corn is a huge depleter of soil nutrients, so the soil will have to be fertilized repeatedly in order to maintain the crops. Most fertilizer is made from oil, so aren't we back to the beginning of the circle? Or shall we call it a rat-race? Yes, we could use cow-rabbit-pig-horse dung to fertilize farms, but a lot of people don't like the smell, and there is some consideration of spreading diseases through animal dung. There is also the problem of trucking it to the farms.

Let's all go back to riding/driving horses. Get rid of the multi-level freeways and all gas-fueled vehicles, and drive horses once again. We could then be closer to one another because we would depend on our communities for our contacts, our recreation, and our friendships. All the soil would be used for producing enough hay for all those horses. We'd have to raise a lot of cattle, because we are going to need a LOT of leather for harness.

But how would we manage the flies and the sanitation on city streets? One thing for sure, we'd all be doing a lot more walking than most of us do now.

Yes, we have a huge problem, but no one can agree on the solution....

Barbara

As for gas...our next car
will be a small little one that has great gas mileage or a little diesel that can be converted to bio fuel....a friend has a car he uses year round up here that runs on veggie oil...
