I've never tried it, but my cousin (who does 3-day eventing) said that she's used WD-40 on knots before.

Mineral oil works fine. I bet glycerine would work fine. Water works pretty well, actually.

 

I've spent maybe a total of 4-5 hours detangling three different manes over the years. Peruvians have pretty long manes.
