[RC] Black Hills vs Coalfax Coalrush - Marlene Moss

Can anyone compare terrain/difficulty of the Black Hills vs Coalfax Coalrush – for the 30’s?  I’ve done Coalfax and I really love the ride.  It is also much closer for us.  But since I may have a horse that I’ve either sold or will be in the process of selling doing Black Hills - it would be really cool to ride with her even though I know some good people will be mentoring/sponsoring the buyer.

I am also starting a 4yo that is in good enough shape to do 30 miles, but I consider his mind and desire to do endurance fragile so I would prefer his first ride to be easy/fun for him.  He is half mustang and very physically capable (and OMG soooo athletically built) but he is also smart enough to decide that there is no reason to go forward when “right here” is good enough.  His mom (mustang) did that after her first season, she seemed quite happy moving along at a nice steady pace for 4 rides and then on one conditioning ride decided she’d had enough.  So I don’t want to push him, right now he seems very happy and I want to keep it that way.

So if Black Hills is significantly easier, I might spend the extra gas money and drive to SD. I think I would rather be able to move out faster and minimize his time on trail for his first ride since we have been conditioning on more flats with a fair amount of trot.  I hope this makes sense!  I’m sure people will let me know if it seems silly!

Thanks!

Marlene
