[RC] second sweat - terre

My horse has twice now produced a "second sweat", due to coming in too fast and not cooling down properly. In both cases, I had a wool cooler on him and he felt dry and warm underneath it; the sweat was on the outside of the cooler. However, in both cases he was shivering, in spite of apparently being "too hot". Pulse recovered (down to the 30s), eating, etc ok and looking happy enough, but shivering. Both rides were pretty cool--maybe 40-45' F.
Anybody have any thoughts about the shivering? Frankly, it scares me. (but then I scare easily!) Obviously I need to either come in slower, cool out better or both--I'm just concerned that there is an additional element I'm missing.
