Re: [RC] Draft crosses - Kathryn Lindsay Sevier

Oh that is great to hear! Doesn't sound like there are many draft crosses out there doing endurance rides (based on replies to this topic). Did your husband train his horse to do endurance? If so, any tips when training a draft cross to do long rides?
Thanks.
Kathy

The best endurance horse my husband ever had was a 16 hand Percheron X Morgan. He was consistent top ten and placed 4th in Tevis one year. He also worked cattle. Great horse!

Subject: [RC] Draft crosses

Hi everyone from Colorado. I am a lurker on this list learning as much as I can. I love endurance/trail riding and cannot wait to be part of it. However I have a nontraditional horse in the world of endurance riding. My mare is 4 this spring and we think she is a product of the pmu industry but we ll never know for sure. We think she is half percheron and half quarterhorse. So that means she inherited heavy muscles and bones. She is ard 16 hands. She only had a few rides on her and I'm taking my time with her. What I would like to know if there is any good record of draft crosses completing 50 miles and 100 miles of endurance rides? I expect to be one of the last in the competition but I hope we can complete. If there are people on this list riding on their draft crosses, please tell me what you did to prep the horse for a ride? How long, etc? I don't plan to enter her for another year or two if that helps any. I need to work on steering with her! Thanks in advance for your input!
