Re: [RC] Draft crosses - Don Huston

Hello Kathryn,
There are many techniques to improve steering but what I like to do the most is ride curving, twisting single track trails many times so that the horse gets to know the trail all the while I continue to very firmly neck reign every turn. There is something about the horse knowing where to go (the trail dictates the turns) and the reinforcement of neck reigning that really helps to teach good steering. It is also much more fun than being in the ring. After a while I start testing the steering by finding places on the trail that have other choices and change the pattern or maybe just swing a circle around some bushes. Sudden stops for no apparent reason are an important part of steering and need practice also. Break it up and have some fun.

Hi everyone from Colorado. I am a lurker on this list learning as much as I can. I love endurance/trail riding and cannot wait to be part of it. However I have a nontraditional horse in the world of endurance riding. My mare is 4 this spring and we think she is a product of the pmu industry but we ll never know for sure. We think she is half percheron and half quarterhorse. So that means she inherited heavy muscles and bones. She is ard 16 hands. She only had a few rides on her and I'm taking my time with her. What I would like to know if there is any good record of draft crosses completing 50 miles and 100 miles of endurance rides? I expect to be one of the last in the competition but I hope we can complete. If there are people on this list riding on their draft crosses, please tell me what you did to prep the horse for a ride? How long, etc? I don't plan to enter her for another year or two if that helps any. I need to work on steering with her! Thanks in advance for your input!
