Re: [RC] Engine RPMs While Hauling - Truman Prevatt

Ed covered this pretty well. Gas engines "RPM sweet range" for producing torque is higher than that of Diesel engines. Torque is more important for towing than horsepower. A gas engine is also "red lined" at a higher RPM than a Diesel engine. Look on your tack and you will see an indication of the "red line." For a gas engine 3 k is no big deal.

The modern computer controlled automatics do a fine job managing your engine/transmission. The newer models even have a "tow/haul" mode which is particularly useful in "city driving" where it raises the shift points to keep the engine for being "lugged" or on downhills which imparts some compression breaking.

So let the computer manage you engine/transmission. It knows a lot more about what is going on from the feedback from the various sensors than you know.

One final thing is if you have a marginal sensor - it can cause problems. You can have an authorized service center for the truck make test this. Also there might be a more recent release for the computer firmware - again an authorized service center would be the place to contact.

I guess I'd be interested to hear that as well. I've got a gasoline 5.3L V8
hauling a 16' steel GN stock trailer with 1-2 horses in it. I've never seen
the RPMs over 3k, and it's usually about 2k. It never occurred to me that I
should worry about the number... I just don't let it shift into a gear that
makes the engine scream, if you know what I mean?

I have a 1/2 ton truck pulling a 3-horse BP trailer and the truck has an RPM
meter on the dash display.
It has a gas engine and a 4.5 or 5L engine...don't know which.
While hauling 2 horses today I noted the RPM read 2-1/2 and up to 3 on
occasion...depending upon my speed and the terrain.

So I'm just curious at what RPM reading does it show the truck/engine may be
straining vs not.

Just Curious,
Val
