I highly recommend a Donna Snyder Smith clinic. She teaches a method - you get the feel working on little trampolines - that is really effective on downhills.

The simple answer to your question is that people were saying you should be down when the uphill foot is down when riding on a slope. Since the downhill foot is bearing the most force while riding at a slant, posting on the opposite front fore will help to aleviate some of that additional bearing force from the rider.
