Re: [RC] Safest at the Trot??? - Barbara McCrary

Kat, I am one of the "few" who feel safer at the trot than at the canter...for several reasons. 1) Generally, the horses that I've had were smoother at the trot than at the canter; 2) The horses I have ridden often were steady at the trot and would like to sunfish or crow-hop at the start of a canter, especially when they were fresh; 3) If the horse were to spook, I could stay with him better at a trot than at the canter; 4) I just like posting and the rhythm of a nice smooth trot. Needless to say, in buying a horse, I look for a smooth trot, along with a fast walk. I don't care particularly what kind of canter he has, as I seldom use it. Just my preference...

learning to ride, thought "yep, the trot is the
easiest for me to get in rhythm with?"

I generally prefer canter to trot (and I dislike the
big, flying trot which is the main gait you see used
in endurance here) but on my reliably spooky horse I
nearly always come back to a trot when I see a
spook-provoking trail side 'monster' coming up - I
feel safer that way.
