[RC] nurse mares / orphan foals - Karen Everhart

Jonni mentioned that she did not know horses are bred to produce a foal with the babies then immediately removed (within 24-48 hours) to place a higher valued foal on her side (generally Thoroughbred babies).  The babies are sent to slaughter if they don't die first.

Rescues across America have been working to save these babies for years.  A cost and time intensive process.  Imagine having 50 - 100 orphaned horses every year at your house all between January and April.  Lost Foals (and other groups) does that.  Then they find homes for the babies.

Just another example of the "throw-away" horse industry in America.  And remember, the propaganda tells us that the only horses slaughtered are old, lame, and uncontrollable.

What I did not realize is some breed mares just to have a mare that can be used as a nurse mare, but the foals are just "by products". http://www.ctba.com/nursemarenbank.htm
