Re: [RC] heart murmur - Barbara McCrary

I have known horses with mild heart murmurs that did endurance rides.  I think one of my husband's former endurance horses had one.

Subject: [RC] heart murmur

Does anyone have info about whether a horse with a very minor heart murmur would have any trouble entering into novice level CTR? I have a student that has a 17 yr old in good condition pony that wants to do some CTR's at the novice level but he has a very small heart murmur.

I coach and train horses and students for this, but generally I'm working with younger stock horses as they get going. This girl already owns her beloved large size pony and is hoping to use him.

This heart murmur was there in a bigger way a number of years ago and so she had the vet check him yesterday and he thinks that if he is conditioned up steadily it might even go away it is so minor. He had to listen over and over to even convince himself it was even there. He thinks the pony should be fine. I'm willing to go forward on that, but I did want to check if anyone has personal experience.
