[RC] is forage diet sufficient or does everyone feed grain or an equivalent? - Marta Kozlowska

i'm in the process of switching my mare to happy hoof which is forage
based formula (chopped dry grass, hay, and some other 'stuff'). it can
be fed as a complete feed and it's recommended for horses prone to
laminits because it's a low calorie, low sugar formula.
my mare right now only gets about 1.5 lbs of average quality pelleted
feed (purina) and that's mostly to keep her happy when everyone else
eats. she is borderline IR hence me trying to find something more
suitable for her.
do you think that i can use just the happy hoof even during or before rides?
on one hand i think since it's a compelete feed, it provides her with
everything she needs, on the other hand i wonder if she should be
supplemented with something else. the feed itself is 8% protein and 4%
fat.

thanks for your input!

marta
