Re: [RC] Transfer Factor and asking your vet - Beth Walker

Well, I didn't really do much research ... just a Google search and looked at two sites.

As for the vet remark .. I was thinking primarily of the list of ingredients. I agree that most vets probably don't keep up with the latest wonder supplements, but they might be able to spot an ingredient that is fine for humans, and not fine for horses.

Interesting info about the time spent on nutrition in vet schools.

I would at least check with a vet, to make sure that
there wasn't anything in it that could harm your
horse.

Beth, thanks much for doing my research for me! Shame
on me - I normally research everything (I work in a
library), but this time I got a bit lazy.

As for checking with a vet, I've discovered that vets,
though very much a crucial component in keeping our
animals healthy, are not all-knowing. I've learned,
sometimes the hard way, that the responsibility for my
horses' health rests squarely on MY shoulders. A vet
may or may not be able to give me the correct advise,
due to his/her training (or lack of), own experience,
biases, etc. I've always said that my favorite vets
are the ones who are confident enough to say "I don't
know the answer but I'll help you find it". I am in NO
NO way slamming vets - I just think too many people
think that vets know everything there is to know about
health, nutrition, soundness, etc etc, and they just
can't - there aren't enough hours in the day during
vet school (I work in a vet school - you know how much
nutrition class time they have - pretty close to
zilch). Boy, I took off from your one comment, eh?!

Kristi

Life's a journey, so enjoy the ride (and try not to fall off)
