RE: [RC] Any comments on the Vermont Moonlight Ride - Sharon Levasseur

Susan,

That ride has been a goal of mine for 3 years, and this year I'm going to do
my darndest to get there. Last year I volunteered.

From what I can tell, and what I have heard... there are a LOT of BIG HILLS.
It's Vermont after all. ;-) And last year there was a lot of mud on the
off-trail sections, but there was also a lot of dirt road. There's a really
cool aspect of the ride, which is the 100-mile runners. I'm not sure to
what degree they share the trail with the 50-mile riders but I know the
100-mile riders see them all the time. It's a neat thing for morale... the
horses really work off the runners, and vice versa. The most important
thing for you to know, though, was that ALL the riders I saw were smiling.

Most riders attach glow sticks to their horse, to prevent interfering with
their horse's night vision. (Headlamps tend to do that.)

I've heard some folks say they never practiced riding at night before
tackling a night ride. Others have said they've bought glowsticks and gone
out to ride on a brightly moonlit night. That's what I've done (without the
glowsticks though). It helps if you start riding before dark and then ride
right through twilight into dark. That way your eyes adjust.

Good luck!

Subject: [RC] Any comments on the Vermont Moonlight Ride

Hi,
I am pretty new to endurance and would like some information on the
Moonlight Ride in Vermont on July.

What is the ride like?

What do people do to see in the dark. Total newbie question for sure. I am

guessing head lamps, want to see if I am right.

How often and how do people train for riding in the dark?

Thanks,
Susan Cushing
