Re: [RC] [RC] How I was(n't) recruited - Dawn Carrie

Kat's experience is similar to mine.  Back in January 1999, I suddenly realized, I finally have a horse (an Arabian, at that!), so now I can do endurance!  I'd heard of the sport years before when I read an article about Tevis, and thought, wow, I want to do that some day!  So I bought two books (Nancy Loving's book "Go the Distance" and Donna Snyder-Smith's book), and started conditioning my little mare, who I'd been trail riding alot on the National Forest.  Our first ride was the Texas Bluebonnet Classic LD in early April 1999.  I showed up, stopped where it looked like there was sort of a headquarters, and said, this is my first ride, what do I do?  A guy (turned out to be the RM) said to find a camping spot (he pointed me in a good direction), get my horse settled in and fed, and then come up and check in.  At check in, I again admitted my ignorance, and again received welcomes and friendly advice.  And so it went all weekend.  People welcomed me, and expressed pleasure that I was there, and assured me that I'd have a great time.  When I came into the vet check, I had to ask where to go, what to do, etc...no problem...smiling volunteers, pulse-takers, vets, and timers helped shepherd me through the process.  Mackenzie and I completed with about 15 minutes left.  And you know what?  I *did* have a great time!  We did our next ride two weeks later.

Oh, and Tevis?  I'll be fulfilling that dream this year.  :)
