Re: [RC] Change to OD - no more Shenandoah River Crossing!! - Truman Prevatt

This is not the first time - growth in the WDC area has forced the OD to move. Many years ago it was run near Leesburg, VA - an area not far from Dullas Airport. Leesburg is now a suburb of WDC. In 1979 we were on a camping trip to the Shenandoah National Park. I had just recovered from surgery so was not ready to deal with the high winds that were going to roll through that night. So we drove off the ridge line and ended up camping on Passage Creek in the valley over. This turned out to be Fort Valley. Where we camped turns out to be one of the checks on the OD (at 80 miles right before you head over Sherman's gap toward the river ).

It was quite quaint and very little used at the time. We did not see a single soul the whole weekend. Given the growth of WDC - this area has become extremely busy. Given I66 opening all the way into downtown WDC, businesses moving up the I66 corridor toward Front Royal and the reliance the OD had on private land for their trail - it was only a matter of time.

As the John Prine song goes "... and they wrote it all down to the progress of man ..."

A sad day indeed.

How very sad. I wonder if some sort of clause could have been built into the deed transfers for new landowners that would have allowed the trail to be used. Around our area, that sort of trail right-of-way was built into land ownership and transfers. This refers only to trails existing before sales.
