to cross a deep stream/resavoir, water up to the horses backs...When
we got across, she said, "boy I'm squishy" then raised her heel up

I discovered why cavalry, huntsmen, and horsemen have worn tall boots
since time immemorial when I was re-scouting old, abandoned, overgrown
trails at Myles Standish State Forest in SE Massachusetts. I
was wearing nothing but a pair of lightweight summer tights and
sneakers. I absolutely *shredded* my tights and then my legs bulling
through the overgrown pitch pine and scrub oak obscuring the trail. Along
about the tenth time a branch scrapes that exposed cut just below your
knee, you think of Puss 'n' Boots and say to yourself..."Ahhhhhh, *now* I
get it!"
