[RC] bitless and plenty of whoa - heidi larson

I got a really nice one from Moss Rock Endurance a few
years ago and tried it on Ash.  He absolutely hated it.  I
never noticed the tightness causing any rubs, it really
didn't seem that tight, but he shook his head like a dog
with any amount of pressure and shook so hard once trying
to get rid of the darn thing that he went down to his knees
during a ride. He had seemed okay with it during training
rides, not violent about it anyway. And this was before he
decided he could be very competitive at rides.  I sold it
and went back to our Mylar snaffle and while we do have
some tantrums and head tossing, he's much happier with what
we currently use and is controllable.  I think it was the
squeezing thing, he's kind of a claustraphopic sort.

I tried the "official" bitless bridle on Kaboot. Though
he's not a head
tosser, he tossed it with that! The pressure seems to
come from
underneath, which sends the nose up to escape it. The
directions also
have you make the noseband very tight which made rub
marks just from
chewing grass during one ride. I tried it on several of
mine, some too
forward, some laid back. All hated it. I did ride someone
else's horse in
competition who used it and she did OK in it but with
*no* contact. You
could tell she considered it severe.
