Re: [RC] Won't hurt? - Barbara McCrary

My husband's horse was a non-drinker on the trail. Arriving at a VC at 35 miles, I gave him a dose of (highly recommended) electrolytes after he finally did drink some. The horse promptly started thumping, then graduated to a full colic. Very odd...this horse was, when a few years younger, a terrific multi-day horse, but as he became a little older, he became more and more adverse to drinking on the trail. We finally sold him to a pleasure rider. Certainly giving electrolytes didn't help the matter at all.

THIS is a fallacy.

Yeah, I've had two metabollic pulls, ever, that I can think of. They both
had to do with what I GAVE, not what I didn't give. Once it was too many
probiotics, he got gassy and had a mild colic. The other time I gave
non-endurance electrolytes and he got thumps. He probably wouldn't have
gotten it if I'd given *no* electrolytes, but that kind sends them even
farther into alkylosis.
