RE: [RC] Splints - Don Huston

Hi Alison,
Thanks for the suggestion. I had some conventional x-rays taken with a little portable machine that showed nothing but the quality was poor. After your email I made an appointment for digital x-rays at a clinic. I will post the results.

Time for an x-ray. Its my understanding that old splints can break
loose - usually its just a chip, but what you are describing is typical
of the reaction when it happens. Usual fix is surgical removal of the
chip.

I bought my current endurance horse 6 years ago from the track with
medial splints on both fronts. The splints were cold, 2" below the knee
and small (thumb nail size). Last year the right splint started getting
bigger after a 50 and sometimes the leg would get minor filling. We did
a 100 last Oct and a 50 in Jan with no filling but the splint got
bigger. We did back-to-back 50's in Feb and the leg stayed puffy for 2
weeks. The horse is not lame and the splint and tendons can be squeezed
very hard with no indication of pain from the horse but obviously
something is happening. The horse has not been ridden for over 3 weeks
now but lives in a 40'x140' pen with 2 buddies so he's moving a lot. I'm
going to rest the horse for at least 3 more months but would like some
recommendations on treatment (herbs, ultrasound, tens, magnetic, etc) to
promote healing. Thanks,
