[RC] newbie, too! - Moriah Nickerson

Hi!
I am a newbie too, and likewise read the ridecamp posts religiously for any good training tidbits.  I am starting a 5 yo arab, who must be a throwback to a mule somewhere as he has a huge unrefined head!  But, that just means there is more room for a brain in there (or so I hope!).  He is really friendly, like a dog!  I am also very afraid of making a mistake and souring him.  He has a very willing and happy-go-lucky personality, which might not make him a winner, but so far he's been a lot of fun to ride.  my biggest hurdles so far have been a saddle that fits, which I am working on, but he is mutton-whithered and rather barrel shaped, and secondly the new england weather, which has turned our trails into ice/mud slides!
if you come across any good training tips please let me know, and I would love to know how to started your training, and what tricks you found to keep them fresh and not bored.  I would like to do a little dressage for cross-training, have you heard if this is beneficial or not?  It might be the only way we can get into shape with the unpredictable weather here.
good luck to you!
