RE: [RC] Alternative to Euthanasia - Tracey Lomax

Dyane,

Out here (South Africa), the most common means of carcass disposal is to
send it to the Lion Park, Croc Park, etc. I had to do it with a livery
horse in December.

When I do it, they are euthanized with a gun before the carcass is collected
by the Park (they do it free of charge, in return for the carcass). Mine
are shot by a vet who confirms they are dead before they are sent.

That's all well and good, Kat, but how is the horse euthanized, (or is he?)
before he becomes lion meat?

As an alternative to forking over big bucks
for a vet to come out and euthanize a horse
and then have the carcass hauled off, or to
pay the backhoe man to dig a hole, you might
check with your local zoo if you have one and
see if they need meat for the big cats.

There are a number of places here is Southern California that (depending
on their current needs) will do this for you/your horse. As long as the
horse can ride in the trailer to get there.

This is MY first choice for putting a horse down. And not just because
it is cheaper than paying to have the carcass hauled off, but because it
seems to me to be the most respectable way for a horse to go....food for
some wild animal.
