RE: [RC] Pulse criteria in NW region - heidi

Truman, again, I've seen considerable evidence to the contrary doing exit exams.

Basically, you are telling me that for fit horses, having the pulse at 60 presents no problem whatsoever because they continue to drop--and I agree.  The ones that we want to catch (and DO catch) are the ones who hit 64 and hang--and yes, Truman, I've seen enough of those to want to slow them down by using more stringent criteria.  In my experience, I just don't see the "hangers" when we use a 60--but I still did when we used 64.  And that was plenty of empirical evidence for me!

In the SE I think the spring Biltmore is probably the only ride with a
60 pulse. 64 has been working fine for years. My experience with my
horses and with taking a very large number of pulses in the pulse box is
the same as Dot's once they hit 68 the drop like a rock. When my old
mare when she hit 68 it took her in the box. When someone got her pulse
she was 56. The Jbird is about the same. I've ridden plenty of rides
with a 60 and I don't ride any differently nor does it take my horse any
longer to make pulse.

For the most part I think the 60 pulse and now 56 pulse are more to make
someone "feel good" than anything else. If the AERC wants to get a
handle on this they have enough rides to plan some experiments and
collect data and address the question in a logical and methodical way
instead of "by the seat of the pants."
