RE: [RC] The only way to afford... - Tracey Lomax

I'm late with mail, please forgive late response :)

Well, the other reason she will never make money from breeding is that
she thinks it is more affordable to buy a mare, breed her to a stallion,
feed her while she is pregnant (and probably after as well) and raise
and train the resultant foal to jumping age, than it is to buy a good
one that is already of jumping age and a proven jumper.

No, no, no....not cheaper, but easier to afford in that you're making
monthly payments rather than forking out a whole lot of dosh as a once-off.

Put money in a bank?? You're kidding, right? This is ME, Kat!

And besides, this mare we like is one that he will compete on as well. We
plan on putting her into foal as a 4yo, and then putting her to work when
the foal is weaned (so she'll be rising 6).

I don't know this for sure about South Africa because I don't know the
relative prices of feed, vets, farriers, and the horses themselves;
however, here in the States it is ALWAYS cheaper to buy the feed, care
and training already in the horse.

Not so much here. I can spend R6 000 for a covering from a top stallion.
It'll cost me R800 per month to feed the mare while pregnant, and then about
R1200 per month to raise the foal til weaning age (say 6 months). And then
R800 per month for the foal til it's 3.5 years and ready to start work. So
let's say it's cost me R50 000 to get to that stage (approximately). I'd be
paying about R80k to R100k for a horse of similar quality.

Of course, you know what you're getting, which you DON’T know when you
breed.

p.s. I also heartily disagree with the idea that only 1 in 100,000 male
horses is stallion quality. _I_ am of the opinion that far too many
good stallions are gelded (or not bred) and far to many bad mares are
bred, and that the overall gene pool of horses would be MUCH better if
"top" stallions were not so overused and the best mares were used for
broodmares (instead of being too busy as performance horses) instead of
the other way around.

Yes, I agree.
