[RC] FW: [RC] Horses feet? - Ginny Holsman


It depends upon the condition of your horse's hooves. For example, are they black and hard, white and soft, or brown and healthy; are they trimmed down to the quick or with plenty of hoof below the horses foot inside; are they trimmed for good balance or does the horse need correction to attain best balanced; are there cracks or other problems; are the laminae strong or weak; is the sole tough and flexible or soft and delicate; is the outer hoof wall water repellant or dry and sensitive to moisture; etc., etc., etc. The condition of the hoof dictates how to dress it.

As I am new to the endurance world and in Ontario there are very few farriers that know what is needed for the horses feet for a hundred miles race.
So my questions are this: What type of trimming are people having done? Is the heal low or is the trim wider and longer? Are people uses Boa Boots or still having them shod? What type of Shoding would be good for a race like the Tevis? If anyone could clear this up that would be great! I want to make sure I do the best I can for my horses feet.
