[RC] FW: [RC] Age of horse and first 100 ride - Ginny Holsman

Different breeds of horses have different life-spans. So, for example, a QH with a typical life-span of 25-30 years would be old at 20 years old; but an Arab with a typical life-span of 35-40 years would not be old until 30 years. That's assuming both are healthy and receive good care and handling. However, what's a typical life-span for any particular horse varies for each horse, depending upon their heritage. Injuries, illness, quality of care and handling, all play a part in the aging process too. So there is no guideline that can be applied specifically to age alone -- except that horses are different than people in that they are most often old only a short time before they die, rather than lingering a long time, ill before death. So IMO, the trick is to figure out the typical life-span of a particular horse and then figure one can compete up to 5 years before the end of that life-span, as long as the horse is healthy and receiving good care and handling.

Dodie,

I don't think 15 is too old for a horse at all. In fact, Shaba
and I are going to sign up for at least one 100 this year and he
is 17.  I think that it is very dependent upon the horse itself;
some will be able to stay in endurance longer than others, while
some will need to retire earlier. From your description, sounds
like your older horse will be fine, especially if you are not
going any faster than middle of the pack. The true test will be
to go out and TRY it. Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your
horses' progress (:)>

Lauretta and Shaba (who thinks age isn't a number but an attitude
and, based on this rule, will always be a yearling)
