Re: [RC] cover photo - rides2far

I enjoyed the cover photo on the Feb. issue of the Endurance News. I
have ridden horses all my life as I was born and raised on a working
cattle ranch.

Wow. Major cowboy points

Those that have such a
fear of the horse should maybe grab onto another activity.

Well, if all us helmet wearing wimps quit...you're going to be pretty
lonely out there from what I've seen.

Quite > frankly, you'll only see me bare-headed,with a ball cap or a
regular
hat of some kind.

Well, as long as we're coming out with our pet peeves...I just hate
having to stop my horse for people to get their ballcaps that blow off.

That's one of the reasons why I ride endurance. I
want to be left alone to ride as I will and please don't even make
the attempt to tell me what to wear to include the helmet.

No problem..more power to you. The world's over populated as it is. You
enjoy your freedom (really!) and if something happens, heck, it's that
much more room for the rest of us. Everybody's happy. :-))

For what it's worth, my husband's cousins from Montana visited us last
year. The woman's dad had worked his family's 5000 acre ranch all his
life. One day his horse was just walking along and for some reason
stumbled and fell and the dad hit his head. It killed him. The woman
looked at our endurance photos and said, "If my dad had been wearing one
of those he'd still be alive". Now, no, I really don't want to see the
old cowboys out on the range in their helmets. It would be so out of
place. Right now I can't picture a lot of equine sports (barrel racing,
etc) with helmets. HOWEVER, that makes me even happier that my family
enjoys endurance riding where we DON'T feel silly for wearing them. It's
nice to not look dumb to wear it...it's the NORM. If you don't want to,
no problem, but obviously lots of us are very comfortable in them.

P.S. The day my horse's feet flew out from under him on a 90 degree turn
at a gallop, I was still firmly in the saddle but my shoulder slapped the
ground hard enough to break my collarbone in half..and my helmet split.
I don't know of anything I could have done about that accident...even if
I'd been raised on a working cattle ranch. You are WELCOME to go without
, but don't call me "scared" for wearing one, and I won't call you any
descriptive names for not.

Angie ....you gotta problem with my safety cages??
