Fw: Re: [RC] [RC] Nutrition - Kristene Smuts

Thanks Ginny for that good explanation. I'm sure those who inject for a
race specifically do not think of the long term effects, in general.

As an equine expert, experienced in equine nutrition, and familiar with
enhancing strength, stamina, and endurance in sport horses, let me try
to explain this to you.

A horse must consume a certain amount of certain food (hay, feed,
supplements) in order to extract and metabolize certain nutrients from
that lengthily process that also burns up a lot of energy to accomplish.
This not only takes a long time but the net result is less than the
gross nourishment value of the food consumed.

Injectible nutrients can be metabolized quickly with minimal energy for
processing, but the drawback is that no nutrient works by itself. An
excessive amount of one nutrient causes an increased need for
co-nutrients that can easily then become deficient as a result. So it's
important to think beyond the impact on the day of the race.

For example, you could consume speed and feel high energy briefly for a
race, but you would feel much worse, later, for having done so.

For this reason, injectible nutrients should be provided only in
conjunction with rest and recuperation, related to rehabilitation,
combined with plenty of all the other co-nutrients essential to full
rehabilitation. In preparation for a race, by improving the health and
wellness of your horse, over a long-term effort to increase their
strength, stamina and endurance -- as part of a complete program of
nutrition and exercise, this can improve performance, eventually; but to
use injectible nutrients just before a race to improve performance
during a race, is potentially VERY harmful to a horse!

We had a discussion about injectable vitamins and I'm wondering if
this
has any real impact on the horse's performance on the day of the race?
If it does, what are the biological mechanics behind it?
