RE: [RC] Is it possible-- reponse to Ed - Rae Callaway

Sounds like some great horses, Sylvia, but they don’t quite fit the mold of “untrained” before they started endurance.  They both had a base of previous competition, which would be quite different from a horse that’s just been a pasture potato.

Maybe a horse can go from untrained to ready in a year. Examples anybody?

They can do it.....My horse, Harca, went from a dressage horse to a Tevis horse in under 12 months.  He did 2 50 mile rides and 2 NATRC rides (Open division) during the summer leading up to Tevis and he finished in great shape in 1992.  Went on to finish 5  more Tevis rides and VC 100.  He was 7 years old for his first Tevis. His owners, Henry and Helen Logan, did a great job of getting him ready .... they were very experienced Tevis riders.  But I also think he was exceptional (I'm not biased at all, no not me <g>).

Another of their horses, Gdapper, came off the Arabian race track as a 9 year old, did 4 50 milers and finished Tevis....that was over the course of 2 years though.  The delay was due mostly to Gdapper's brain refusing to accept that he was no longer a (rank) stallion <g>.
